ABOUT THE KAGOOLS

PHYSICAL COMEDY DOUBLE ACT
SO LONG ‘WILKINSON FORD’, LONG LIVE THE KAGOOLS!

The Kagools were originally created by comedy double-act Wilkinson Ford, starting life as recurring characters in their full-length sketch shows.

The Kagools proved so popular with audiences that in 2013 they started developing a full-length show featuring the characters and their first show, Kagoolio was born.

Kagoolio debuted in 2014 with a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe. The show was so well received that the duo decided to focus on developing The Kagools further and are back with an eponymously titled show for 2015.

"It feels like a natural progression for us, and the great thing about The Kagools is that the comedy is universal. Whatever language you speak and however young or old you are, you can follow along and feel a part of the ridiculous mess The Kagools get themselves into."

This year’s show, ‘The Kagools’ debuted at Leicester Comedy Festival in February and wowed festival director Geoff Rowe so much that he personally invited the duo to appear at the Festival’s grand finale show ‘Comedy Heaven’ at the 800-seater Curve Theatre.

ABOUT THE SHOW

ENCHANTING, BOLD, HIGH-ENERGY FUN
‘The Kagools’ is a physical comedy show featuring two silent and strange, but friendly, characters (also called The Kagools).

Through mimed sketches, audience participation and using interactive multimedia, we follow The Kagools on their adventures through space and time.

The Kagools is universally appealing as the entire story is told physically, and as such it has been designed to appeal to young and old alike.

The show is a glimpse into an enchanting, playful and hilarious world of two characters who live both in this realm (live on stage) and in an alternate reality which they interact with, and the audience can see (via an on-stage screen).

The show was developed through playing with interactive media, using pre-recorded footage to create unique visual effects when combined with live action.

WILKINSON

NICOLA

Nicola (or Nicky, as she's known on the comedy circuit) Wilkinson is an actress and comedian. She trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and went on to take up acting professionally. Always having had a passion for comedy and a flair for comic roles, over the years she has been involved in sketch and improvisational comedy, alongside a vast array of more traditional acting roles.

Having made her first forays into stand-up comedy as a resident compere at the award-winning Funny Side Comedy clubs, she's now gigging all over the country as an act in her own right.

A bright and quick-witted Hullonian, her warm, likeable, down-to-earth style instantly puts audiences at ease; as ready and eager to laugh as they would be sharing a great joke with a friend. Her comedy mixes charming, real-life anecdotes with just the right dose of self-deprecation and often brilliantly funny improvised riffs with the crowd.

Nicky's impressive stage presence, great comic timing and considerable comedy performance experience are ensuring she's moving quickly through the stand-up comedy ranks, definitely making her one to watch!

At 18.45 daily she hosts #NickysHappyHour on Twitter & Facebook. This year she'll be bringing a live version of The Happy Hour to the Edinburgh Fringe, also at 18.45, nightly, at Just The Tonic at The Caves.

FINALIST NEW ACT OF THE YEAR 2013

FINALIST SO YOU THINK YOU'RE FUNNY 2013

FORD

CLAIRE

Claire Ford is an actress and character comedian. She trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and since graduating has enjoyed a wide variety of work, everything from straight theatre to presenting.

It's comedic and character roles though in which she really excels. Having appeared in a range of scripted comedy roles, she's also created a vast array of alter egos including; anthropology student and poet: Natasha, B&B manager and Carer: Ange, Life Coach: Verity and Holistic Therapist & Psychic, Brightness.

Also an accomplished film-maker, several of her characters have made appearances online, most notably comedy creation 'Terri Skyler' (wannabe celebrity) whose web series CelebriTerri', recently caught the attention BBC producers who cast her in their internet-themed TV comedy pilot, 'Fat Pipes'.

In 2010 she was commissioned to present a self-shot behind the scenes documentary 'The Awards Diaries' for the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award.

As comfortable live as on film, Claire has a real flair for improvisation and audience interaction.

In addition to The Kagools, Claire will be bringing her second solo clowning show 'Box' to the Edinburgh Fringe this year which promises more ‘Brilliant, unique and boundary bending comedy’ (Adelaide TalkFringe).

Physical comedy duo The Kagools bring their unique show to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

"Kids & adults alike will love this excellent & interactive show...utterly delightful & thoroughly silly. ★★★★" – BroadwayBaby

Their debut show, 'Kagoolio', delighted audiences at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

Since then, they’ve been performing far and wide, at Festivals including: Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival, Brighton Fringe, Bath Comedy Festival, Happy Channel Islands and TouMAZEing in Stavanger.

"2015 has been amazing so far for The Kagools. Following last year’s Edinburgh show, we’ve been lucky enough to be invited to perform all over the UK and even in Norway."

On seeing their performance in Leicester, Festival Director Geoff Rowe was so impressed that he personally invited them to perform at the DLCF closing gala (at the 800-seater Curve Theatre). Comedian John Moloney also invited them to perform at this year’s Balham Comedy Festival having seen them only once, calling them 'stars of the future'.

This August, they return to Edinburgh with an eponymously titled show, and the duo have opted to use the ‘Pay What You Want’ ticketing model, to enable as many people as possible to enjoy it.

"The show already had no language or age barriers, so we wanted to remove the cost barrier too. We're really excited about our return to Edinburgh this year and sharing the show with new audiences"

THE KAGOOLS IS ENCHANTING, BOLD, HIGH-ENERGY FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO ENJOY.

Brighton Fringe 2015

FRINGE REVIEW

by Andrew Allen 9th May 2015

The Kagools: 'The Kagools'
FRINGE REVIEW HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SHOW

As the tagline says, they’re cute, they’re mute. Ploughing your way through the Fringe brochure, coming across the phrase ‘family friendly’ is something of a double edged sword. With no swords. And probably not much edge. Sure, when you’ve got a family and a budget, it’s understandable that you’ll want to spend your hard earned cash on a show that quite genuinely pleases everyone, young and old. That ‘family friendly’ line, though. Too often that might indicate a certain level of blandness.

Thankfully, there’s no risk of that here, in a show that is gleefully infectious for the kids, as well as being whip-smart for the grown ups. It’s probably true that there’s enough space for slightly darker moments that will appeal to the adults while sailing over the heads of the kids, such as the sequence where both Kagools are unblinkingly obsessed with an audience member, but what really comes across is a sense of kindness. Those audience members, for instance: nobody has to participate who doesn’t want to, and those that are reluctant to play along are treated with respect and compassion: the Kagools are your cool – and slightly batty – older sisters.

One of the most interesting things about the show is how successfully the performers play with pause and silence. As you might imagine, this is quite a neat trick in a show in which nobody says anything in the first place. There are several moments of gorgeous tension: kids in the audience giggling in delight because the Kagools are not quite doing something .. yet. The show can be summed up, essentially, in three words: silly, sweet, lovely. This is not, as it might sound, dammed faint praise.

There’s the very pleasing sense that the DNA of this show very likely can be traced back to a couple of university roommates clowning around in front of the mirror for their own amusement. Now, luckily, we’re being let in on the joke. Performers Nicola Wilkinson and Claire Ford (together, they have the razor sharp name of Wilkinson Ford) riff off each other with ease.

There are lots of clever gags (maybe even slightly too many) that have the performers on stage interact with pre-recorded video, which display a unique riff on clowning. There’s not much of a narrative here, but that said, there doesn’t really need to be. The Kagools act like children at play, easily distracted by the next funny thing (like which of them has the better sweets), while persuaded to revisit old obsessions and jokes. In this, any children in the audience will swiftly recognise kindred spirits, and will likely demand a shopping trip to the wet weather gear department of your local clothing store.

Wilkinson Ford: Kagoolio
★★★★

Wilkinson Ford is the collective machination of Nicola Wilkinson and Claire Ford, combining their twin talents as actresses and comedians in an enchanting sketch comedy, Kagoolio.

Kids and adults alike will love this excellent and interactive piece of theatre. It is an utterly delightful and thoroughly silly piece of sketch comedy. Following in the hallowed tradition of Rowan Atkinson’s Mr Bean, we are treated to a cocktail of frenetic, characterful and ridiculous mime sketch. Not a single word is spoken throughout the entire performance. The pair (The Kagools) go on adventures together, dance together, try to one-up one another, and inculcate hapless audience members into their schemes. Despite most people’s reluctance to participate in a show normally, the warmth and friendliness that these two convey establishes trust with the audience very quickly. They deliver a playful and poignant performance.

Together the pair have a picnic, undertake an epic chase, reinvent an 80’s disco, compete for treats and create an excellent tableaux out of people. Much of the narrative is conveyed through their wonderful facial expressions. These two are masterful physical theatre performers. Moreover, the duo make excellent use of a projector screen, incorporating it into their performance in a very clever and perfectly timed way that I will not reveal to you here. It is a clear testament to hours of rehearsal and careful choreography.

The only minor setback is perhaps the discontinuity between some of the sketches; one character might be mad with envy as an audience member appears to favour the other performer, then suddenly drops that motivation completely as they move on to another sketch. It discombobulates the story a little bit. But this really is only a minor setback to an otherwise mesmerising performance.

These two are an absolute delight. It is a rare treat to see such skilful performers at work. This is an upbeat, engaging and hilarious performance. Kids and adults alike will love this excellent and interactive piece of theatre. It is an utterly delightful and thoroughly silly piece of sketch comedy.
